State University of New York officials have named the people who will lead the Potsdam and Canton campuses until permanent presidents are named.

The SUNY board of trustees Tuesday named Jeremy Brown acting president of SUNY Canton and Dennis Hefner interim president of SUNY Potsdam.

Both appointments are effective June 1.

Over the past few months, the current leaders of both campuses -- Canton's Carli Schiffner and Potsdam's John Schwaller -- announced they are leaving their jobs in July.

Brown served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at SUNY Canton from 2003 to 2007.

Since then, he's been president of Dowling College and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

Brown holds a Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham, England.

His annual salary at Canton's helm will be $185,000.

Hefner served as president of SUNY Fredonia between 1996 and 2012. Before that he was vice chancellor for academic affairs at Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and vice president for academic affairs and professor of Economics at California State University, San Bernardino.

Hefner received a bachelor's degree in economics from California State in Chico, and his master's degree and Ph.D. in economics from Washington State University.

His annual salary will be $225,000.
