It was a special day for businesses in the north country.

The United Way of Northern New York held its annual award luncheon Tuesday to celebrate the end of a successful campaign year.

More than 40 local businesses were awarded for their contributions to the community.

Among the honorees were Samaritan Health Systems and the Watertown Urban Mission.

"People love it. I think of it as the Academy Awards of community service," said Jayn Graves of the United Way.

The United Way raised more than $800,000 this past year.

All the money goes to local non-profits like the YMCA and Red Cross.
