The Delicious Health Benefits Of Avocado

Tools

Avocados are a super food.

Not only are they are loaded with nutrients, but eating them can help you improve your "good fat" intake.

They're perfect on salads, sandwiches and other summer fare or just by themselves.

"I'll grab and avocado and cut in half and serve it with some vinaigrette or even just a little kosher salt. I'll eat it right out of the shell," said Boo Wells, Farm House Kitchen chef.

A serving of avocado is really good for you.

"That half an avocado has more potassium than a banana. It has as much Vitamin A as a carrot and it's a source of folic acid. So that kind of puts it in a category of super food," said Susan Zabriskie, certified dietitian.

Here are some tips to make you an avocado aficionado.

"They ripen off the tree and they go from bright green to a purple-brown color. The best way to check for ripeness is to hold the avocado in the palm of your hand and gently squeeze. There should be just a little bit of give. If there's too much give, it's over-ripe," said Wells.

The best way to cut an avocado is to lay it on its side, cut all around the pit and then twist.

Put some lemon or lime on it to keep it from turning brown.

Want to speed up the ripening process?

Seal the avocado in a brown paper bag with either an apple or a banana.

It will be ready to cut in a couple days.
