The North Country Digs OutIt was a common site across the North Country Saturday. Snow blowers cranking up for the first time this winter. And it wasn't just snow blowers, people were using anything they could to clear out from Friday's storm. For drivers of plow trucks, it was an all-night affair. "I've been out since four o'clock this morning doing my customers," said James Desormeau of TJ Trucking and Paving. And it's not just regulars, storms like this one, especially late in the season, can catch people off guard. "They have no means of taking care of the drive way. So, they'll call someone to come and plow it.," says Desormeau. When the dig out and clean up was done Saturday, for those that could brave the cold, it was time to put all the new snow to some good use. Sleds, or even inflatable swimming pools, were out in full force at Thompson Park and skiers took full advantage of fresh snow at Dry Hill Ski Area. "This is what gets people out and gets them enthusiastic about winter and that's what we need," said Dry Hill owner Tim McAtee. Up until Friday it's been a green winter for the most part, but Dry Hill was up and running well before the storm. "We make snow, so we've had skiing and tubing for, I think we're on day twenty-four or twenty-five," said McAtee. Of course, snow fall does help create attention. "Unfortunately, the general public doesn't see snow in their backyard, and they just don't really think about it (skiing), or think it can't be any good here," McAtee adds. With more cold temperatures on the way, it doesn't look like the snow will be going anywhere anytime soon. Most Popular |
