At left is the new open-air pavilion inside the New York State Zoo at Watertown's Thompson Park.
The roughly 2,000-square-foot facility sits where the zoo aviary did before it was torn down.
With stone columns and a covered, outdoor setting, the new pavilion serves as a centerpiece for the zoo.
"We're extremely happy," zoo director John Wright said, "because it still connects people with fresh air and being outdoors and really being able to hear the animal sounds and all this other stuff."
The pavilion is designed for a variety of occasions, including private events, birthday parties and educational programs.
It even has a projector screen for presentations.
