Three members of an Afghanistan-born Montreal family still insist they are innocent even after being found guilty of killing three daughters and the first wife of the patriarch. A jury took 15 hours to find Mohammad Shafia, his wife Tooba Yahya and their son Hamed each guilty of four counts of first-degree murder in a shocking case of honour killing. But after the verdict was read, the three denied killing teenage sisters Zainab, Sahar and Geeti as well as Rona Amir Mohammad, their father's childless first wife. Mohammad Shafia declared through a translator, "we didn't commit the murder and this is unjust." His wife, Tooba, responded: "Your honourable justice, this is not just. I am not a murderer, and I am a mother." Their son Hamed said in English: "Sir, I did not drown my sisters anywhere." The bodies of the victims were found in a submerged car in a Kingston, Ontario canal June 30th, 2009. -Associated Press Most Popular |
