Update: Canton Fire Caused By Extension Cord

St. Lawrence County fire investigators say a trailer fire Thursday morning was caused by a faulty electrical extension cord.

The trailer - at 11 Jameson Road, lot 31 in Canton -  was extensively damaged as volunteer firefighters braved single-digit temperatures to extinguish the flames.

The blaze broke out around 10:30 a.m. at the home of Bud and Danette Hance on Jameson Road.

Neighbors told 7 News the couple was not at home at the time the blaze broke out and had been living elsewhere due to a malfunctioning furnace.

Firefighters from Canton and Dekalb Junction removed several oxygen tanks from the burning trailer.

Fire officials said the faulty extension cord was connected to a 'lifeline' call system.

The fire extensively damaged the kitchen and living room.
