Worker Escapes Serious Injury In Canton Power OutageA man operating a truck escaped serious injury Thursday when the 'boom' on his vehicle came into contact with a 13,000 volt line. The accident knocked out power to part of downtown Canton, starting at 3:20 p.m. Some power was restored shortly after 4 p.m. The man was part of a crew from Syracuse Signal Systems that had been putting up temporary traffic lights in downtown Canton. While working on the last light, the truck's boom hit a 13,000 volt line on Riverside Drive, causing the outage. The man operating the truck then made a crucial decision: rather than risk completing the electrical circuit from the boom through his truck - and him - if he stepped out onto the ground, he stayed in his truck until the power line burned itself out. He was shaken up, and the man was very lucky, said Tom Maroun, a state Department of Transportation official on scene Thursday. Officials expected all power to be restored by early evening.
