'Tis the Season...for House Fires

By Scott Atkinson

When we think about the holidays, one thing that doesn't often come to mind is fire safety.

Fire officials say, it should.

With all the decorating, cooking, and heating, there is an increased threat of house fires this time of year.

Among the biggest holiday fire hazards: cooking using propane or gas, turkey fryers, burning candles, and faulty extension cords.

Officials say being ready and aware of the heightened danger is key during the holidays.

"Fire safety is important all year. However, especially during the holiday season, you have family over, you have friends over. It's very important to keep everybody safe who comes to your home, and we just see an increase in fires," said Captain Charles Waugh of the Watertown Fire Department.

Waugh says the best advice is to always be mindful of fire safety and to make sure smoke detectors are in good working order.
