Tourism Council Markets Region To Canadians

A plan to market the north country to Canadians seems to be paying off.

The Thousand Islands International Tourism Council spends $40,000 a year buying advertising in southeastern Ontario, in places like Brockville, Kingston and Ottawa.

The campaign reaches about 100,000 people. The hope is to bring more sales tax revenue into Jefferson County.

The message: Watertown has new shopping opportunities, along with plenty of room for guests to spend the night.

"What we have are some real nice hotel properties in Watertown now, some new ones, and some of the ones that have been around for a long time, but upgraded," said the toursim council's Gary DeYoung.

DeYoung said Watertown's shopping is also attractive to Canadians, from well-known chain stores to locally owned downtown businesses.

The money for the campaign comes from the occupancy tax in the town and city of Watertown.

The tourism council hopes to soon increase the spending from $40,000 to $100,000 a year.
