Town Of Canton Is Finalist For National Award

The town of Canton is one of 20 finalists vying for a national All America City Award.

Town officials have focused attention on efforts to protect SUNY Canton's autonomy from a shared presidency with neighboring SUNY Potsdam.

Local officials are in the process of working on a promotional video highlighting the community.

Town Supervisor David Button says while this year's awards program is spotlighting community-wide initiatives that benefit veterans and military families, Canton's efforts to ensure the college remains a separate entity in SUNY's shared services plan fits in with the criteria.

"Just to be a finalist says that we're doing things that are progressive and inclusive in this community, so we're just absolutely excited about this," said Button.

The National Civic League, which sponsors the All America City awards, will make its selection known at an awards ceremony in mid-June in Denver, Colorado.
