Two 3 year old girls riding in an Amish buggy that was struck by a Federal Express truck near Massena Monday afternoon remain in critical condition in a Syracuse hospital.

The 24 year old mother of one of the girls is also hospitalized there with a spinal injury.

Police are not releasing their names.

State police say the truck's operator, 28 year old Robert William of Gouverneur, was driving along Route 37 when he rear-ended the buggy.

He had just passed an uninvolved vehicle and pulled back into the right lane.

All six occupants were ejected from the buggy and were initially treated at Massena Memorial Hospital.

A female and two small children were later released from Massena Memorial.

The truck driver was not injured.

So far no tickets have been issued.

Route 37 was closed to traffic between Route 37C and O'Neil Road for nearly two hours and was later reopened.

The investigation is continuing.
