Tuesday: Dexter Muni Building Up For Sale

Looking for waterfront property?

How about 8,500 square feet along the Black River?

The Village of Dexter has put its municipal building, which also houses the volunteer fire department, up for sale.

The asking price: $350,000.

"A lot of possibilities for that piece of property," said Tammy Queior of Bayshore Realty. "Great commercial property, a lot of square footage, big overhead doors."

"We need more space. That's the bottom line," said Jim Eves, Dexter's mayor. Eves showed 7 News around the cramped quarters village government now occupies, with boxes piled everywhere and space at such a premium the police share an office with the village planner.

As Eves explained it, a new village office would be built on Liberty Street, on property the village already owns. However, the village needs the $350,000 from selling the current offices for construction costs.

Where does this leave the fire department?

The Brownville Fire District already leases space in the existing building, and has made a purchase offer.

"We're considering. We've made an offer, we're talking with the village," said Bill Archer, Fire District chairman.

"They can own the building," said Eves. "There's a full kitchen, there's a community room, and there's offices. Actually, the fire district has no offices right now."

It's not clear what will happen if the village sells to anyone other than the fire department.
