St. Lawrence Sheriff Warns Of Phone Calls

Tools

St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells says a phone scam is making the rounds, one that uses the name of his department.

In a statement Tuesday, Wells said county residents have received calls from 866-847-1251.

"In the phone calls the individual is claiming to be representing the Sheriff's Office and demanding money for phone calls from inmates," Wells notes.

The company, Wells says, is Secureus Customer Service, which does not provide phone service for St. Lawrence County jail inmates.

Wells notes that the sheriff's department never contacts people for payments for inmate phone calls, and the company that provides inmate phone services doesn't either.

"These are not legitimate calls," Wells writes. He says county residents can report any issues at 379-2222.

So what happens if you call the 866 number? We called it and got a recorded message that suggested any calls coming from that number were from an inmate. It also listed another 800 number we could call for more information, which was disconnected.

Searching for "Secureus" on the internet led us to a web site for "Jail Call Services," which provides no contact phone number. It did, however, list itself as being part of something called "Inmate Services Group," a company.

The only reference to "Inmate Services Group" that we could find in a Google search referred back to "Jail Call Services."
