Tuesday: Winner of Deferiet Election Declines Job
The winner of November's election for mayor of Deferiet is declining the job.
John Pais won as a write-in candidate, 58-29.
However, Pais said Tuesday that he has decided to not take the position.
Pais said he has a "couple of conflicts" and a potential business venture that will preclude him from taking over as mayor.
Pais said he reached the decision over the last week and has notified trustees on the village board, as well as the New York State Conference of Mayors.
Pais said he was told by the Conference of Mayors lawyer that the village board will need to appoint a mayor until next November, when an election for a one year term would be held.
Pais said he has not spoken with the current mayor, the man he beat, Robert Foster.
Foster told 7 News he's interested in holding onto the job, and has told village officials of his interest.
