U.S., Canada Renew Water Quality Agreement

The United States and Canada are once again pledging to step up their clean up and restoration efforts in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.

Both countries renewed a 40-year-old Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement earlier this week.

Among other things, the updated environmental pact includes new sections on climate change, loss of wildlife habitat and a recent wave of invasive species like zebra mussels and Asian carp.

It also sets a two-year deadline for putting together a system for early detection of new invasive species and rapid action to limit their spread.
