Vandals struck St. Mary's Church in Waddington overnight damaging a 54 year old statue of the Virgin Mary.

The five foot statue was knocked off its foundation and its head was broken off.

The statue is located in the church lawn on Oak Street.

Officials in the Diocese of Ogdensburg said the Virgin Mary statue has stood on the church lawn since the summer of 1959 when it was given by Mary Monihon of Louisville in memory of her family.

Monsignor Harry Snow wouldn't speculate on whether the statue's desecration was just a random act of vandalism or related to a hate crime.

He said the despicable act was painful to see.

"I'm very disheartened, I mean, it's just a lovely community," he said.

Neighbors in the area told 7 News they didn't hear or see anything suspicious.

Some residents in the community expressed outrage by the vandalism.

State police are investigating.

Anyone with information on the statue vandalism is asked to contact state police at 379-0012.
