Watertown police say four people are lucky they're alive after the car they were in went off the road, plunged down a steep embankment and sank into the Black River.

It happened late Friday afternoon on Water Street in the city.

Police say a sports utility vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the Black River.

You can't see the Mercury Mountaineer because it's completely submerged.

Four people, including a young child, were inside the vehicle.

Somehow, all of them escaped from the car before it went under.

"When we first heard this come over that a vehicle had gone in the water and it was being submerged, you think the worst...Fortunately while we were in route, we were notified that all of the occupants were able to get out before the vehicle was totally submerged," said Lieutenant Charles Donoghue of the Watertown Police Department.

Police say the people inside the vehicle suffered minor cuts and bruises.

At least one of them was taken to the hospital.
