South Jefferson girls' varsity basketball coach Pat Bassett will apparently return to his coaching duties, following a meeting with the school board today.
The board heard from a packed house of Bassett supporters Monday night, who addressed the panel for about an hour and a half.
After an additional two and a half hours of discussion in executive session, school superintendent Jamie Moesel told reporters Bassett's "administrative leave" would be lifted.
"The board has recommended that Coach Bassett's administrative leave be discontinued, pending a satisfactory resolution of our concerns," she said.
Before that happens, Bassett has to meet with the board today. Moesel said she and the board "have no reason to believe" their concerns won't be answered.
It's not clear why Bassett was placed on leave from his coaching duties last week, but team members rallied around him. Several said they would not play if he did not return.
Bassett did not attend Monday night's meeting, though his wife did, along with scores of South Jefferson residents.
The last two girls' varsity basketball games have been postponed - the weather ended up affecting sports across the north country over the last week - but it's expected Thursday's game against General Brown will be played as scheduled.
