War of 1812 Bicentennial Garden Celebrates 200 Years of Peace

Celebrating 200 years of peace between the United States and Canada - That's the message of a new War of 1812 Bicentennial Peace Garden in Market Square park on West Main Street in Sackets Harbor.

The garden, dedicated in a ceremony Saturday afternoon, is one of 18 such peace gardens along the 600 miles of the War of 1812 trail.

"There was a lot of history here, and if you go up and down the streets as we've come here to do this, we've seen a lot of signs that say the War of 1812. A big part of the battle was fought here and that's one of our main reasons why we have it here," said Joyce Lorraine, project manager for the War of 1812 Bicentennial Peace Garden Trail.

All of the War of 1812 Bicentennial Peace Gardens in the U.S. and Canada have been put together through donations and volunteer work.

They're meant to be a lasting symbol of the longstanding friendship between two countries that share the world's longest undefended border.
