Watch: Community Mourns Teacher, Daughters

The St. Lawrence Central school district - and the communities of North Lawrence and Brushton-Moira - are mourning the loss of a beloved teacher, her mother-in-law, her daughters, another young girl, and a woman who lived in near-by Dickinson Center.

Laurie Dana was a special education and speech teacher at St. Lawrence Central elementary school.  Laurie, her daughters and the others were killed in Thursday's accident on Route 11 near Antwerp.

Friday, students wrote on a long sheet of paper on one of the school's walls. One message: 'Keep smiling up there.'

"We will lean on each other, we will take care of each other," said Marnie Daoust, a friend of Laurie Dana. "Family and friends, that's what it's all about."

On the Dana family farm Friday, you could see Marnie's words in action, as neighbors took over some of the day's work.

"Laurie was a great teacher, a much-beloved member of the community, and her two children were just really wonderful," said school superintendent Stephen Putnam.

(The list of those killed is in our update of the investigation into Thursday's accident. Read it here.)
