Watch: Cousins Top Of The Class In Alexandria

Two cousins are the talk of the town in Alexandria Bay - Riley and Taylor Thomson are at the top of their senior class.

Riley and Taylor are just one month apart in age, and even closer by grade point average. Riley's is 97.3 and Taylor comes in a mere two tenths of a point behind, at 97.1. That means Riley is Alexandria Central's class of 2012 valedictorian. Taylor is the salutatorian.

"It could have gone either way and I didn't really mind which order it was, I knew it was going to be the two of us," Riley told 7 News.

"I'm not disappointed," added Taylor. "Even though we've been close, I always thought that he was going to be valedictorian."

That's the way these close knit cousins have always been; Taylor is stronger in math and science and Riley excels in reading and writing, They realized years ago they had a shot at both finishing senior year at the top.

"It's been a friendly competition, not too competitive," said Taylor.

In the fall, Taylor heads to St. Lawrence University. She plans to study medicine. Riley is taking a year off to travel and then will head to the University of Vermont to major in business.
