Watch: Happy Birthday, Emma! (And Thank You)
Emma Flower Taylor gave Watertown one of its greatest gifts - the Flower Memorial Library.
Saturday, librarians celebrated Taylor's gift with a borthday tea party, on what would have been Emma's 143rd birthday.
"We decided that since her birthday fell on a Saturday, we would celebrate her life with an old fashioned tea party the way she used to do it," said librarisn Suzie Renzi-Falge.
Emma paid for the library, more than $200,000 at the turn of the century, as a memorial to her father, former governor Roswell P. Flower.
The building opened in 1905.
"She just felt it was very very important for everyone to have a place to learn - and she made that happen for Watertown," said Yvonne Reff, librarian.
