Watertown has been without indoor tennis courts since the Watertown Racquet Club closed last summer.
Tennis enthusiasts have found themselves on Route 81 since then.
"It's kind of a tough ride from here to Syracuse just to play tennis," said Jim Reichhart, a former Racquet Club member.
With that in mind, the "tennis community" has been raising money to put indoor courts at the Fairgrounds YMCA off Coffeen Street, according to Watertown Family YMCA CEO Peter Schmitt.
"We're now in the process of seeing whether we can raise enough money to construct two tennis courts and attach them to this facility," Schmitt said.
The estimated cost is $400,000, of which about two-thirds has been raised, Schmitt said.
If the fund raising is successful, and if an agreement can be reached with the City of Watertown for land use, the new courts could be open this summer.
