Catholics from across northern New York gathered Tuesday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Ogdensburg to say goodbye to Monsignor Robert Lawler, who died last Thursday.

(Read his complete obituary here.)

Msgr. Lawler, 83, served as a priest for more than 55 years. In May 1956, he was ordained in St. Mary's Cathedral, the same church where his funeral was held Tuesday.

Msgr. Dennis Duprey recalled Lawler for "his wise counsel, his gentle spirit, always a good listening ear."

"Classy guy," Msgr. Duprey said.

Over his five decades as a priest, Msgr. Lawler worked in Watertown, Brownville, Canton, Madrid and Waddington, as well as holding leadership posts for the Diocese of Ogdensburg.

"He means a lot to me. He's been there," said Carmel Rastley, who attended the service. "As a religious education director he was there. He supported me and helped me through."
