Watch: New Winery Opens In Jefferson County
A new winery opened in Jefferson County Friday.
"Cape Winery" at Deerlick Farm in the Town of Cape Vincent will be open to start on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 pm.
The winery is located on Deerlick Road, off Route 12E.
The winery started out with David and Sandra Fralick, owners of Deerlick Farm, growing a few vines of grapes to make wine for themselves.
"My lovely wife decided maybe we should have a winery because it would be good to make our own wine and sell it," David Fralick said Friday.
As it turns out, the land is ideal for a winery.
"If you read the french definition of a perfect vineyard, it's limestone soil, sloping land, surrounded by water," Sandra Fralick explained.
The Fralicks have started by opening a tasting room in a converted barn. They're offering six wines, all made by them, some using grapes they have grown and some from grapes from the Finger Lakes region.
Cape Winery joins a small, but growing number of wineries centered in the Cape Vincent - Clayton area.
As they welcomed their first customers Friday, Sandra Fralick said "It's rewarding, it really is. The vintage this year is exceptional."
The Fralicks have plans to expand: they already have 1,500 vines and plan to add another thousand this spring.
