Watertown Church Seeks Help For Wheelchair Lift
It's love for the church that brings Jackson Bridgette to First Baptist Church on Sunday mornings, but sometimes he says he just can't do it.
"It's difficult for me to walk up the steps sometimes and my knees start to hurt," Bridgette said.
Pastor Jeffrey Smith says many disabled and elderly people struggle to come up the steps of the church.
To help people like Bridgette, Smith says the church needs a wheelchair lift.
He says he has unsuccessfully reached out to politicians and local businesses for donations and help with grants.
"I hit a stone wall and they said that funds was not available," Smith said.
Smith says the lift would cost about $50,000 and raising the money has been an obstacle.
"We tried fundraisers, but when we did have a certain amount, something would happen: the roof was leaking, the pipes needed to be fixed or it was always something."
The lift would take members from the street to the sanctuary and then from the sanctuary to downstairs.
It's one step to make it a little easier for folks like Jackson Bridgette to enjoy Sunday morning worship.
Smith says if anyone is interested in helping out, they can call the First Baptist Church at 315-782-1051 or email email@example.com.
