Watertown City Manager Mary Corriveau Is Out

Watertown City Manager Mary Corriveau has been put on notice that her contract will not be renewed.

During Tuesday night's city council meeting, lawmakers introduced a surprise resolution about Corriveau.

The vote went 3 to 2 in favor of not renewing Corriveau's contract.

Mayor Jeff Graham and Councilwoman Teresa Macaluso voted against the resolution.

With council members Jeff Smith, Joe Butler Jr. and Roxanne Burns voting in favor of the plan, it looks like Corriveau is out as of April 30 when her contract expires.

"A lot of the decisions on city council are tough, hard decisions to make, and this is probably always one of the toughest when you decide not to renew a contract," said Smith.

"Any decision that I make as a city council member is always what's in the best interest of the city of Watertown. It's not a decision that I make personally," said Burns.

Council members said they had to notify Corriveau of their of their decision now or risk having to pay her a hefty severance package.

Lawmakers who supported the resolution were tight-lipped about their reasons, saying it was a personnel decision made in executive session.

Smith pointed out that previous reviews of the city manager's performance are public record.

Corriveau declined to comment.

There's no word on when the search for a new city manager may begin.
