Watertown Competes for "Most Patriotic Town in America" Title

The relationship between the military and civilian communities in Watertown is putting the city in the national spotlight.

It's in the running to be named 'The Most Patriotic Small Town in America', and now it's all about impressing the judges.

A two-person crew is travelling to each of the six towns that have been named finalists in the Rand McNally/USA today Best of the Road Contest.

They arrived at their first stop - in Watertown - Friday night and spent Saturday touring the community.

"We are very confident in what we are. We're patriotic and we think they're going to see that," said Peter Whitmore, who is serving as a volunteer tour guide for the Best of the Road crew.

"It's our job to make sure that they feel that when they leave and we're confident that's going to happen," he said.

"It's not just about red, white, and blue," said Mary Corriveau, who is also volunteering as a tour guide. "It's about how you live, how you feel about your country, how you feel about your community, and how you feel about the people in your community."

The community-wide tour to show Watertown's patriotism kicked off Saturday morning with a ceremony on Public Square.

Military and civilian community leaders alike turned out - and spoke out - to help make the city's case in the contest.

The crew documenting it all says they're impressed with what they've seen so far:

"They have really shown us what patriotism is. And it's really heartfelt. And that to me has been the best thing so far, is to meet such wonderful people," said the Best of the Road's Sandi McKenna.

"We're going to discover what patriotism means to each town along the way. And we just kind of file our report and turn it over to the judges," said Rick Griffin.

"And you know, we're rooting for every town," he added.

You can follow the Best of the Road crew's journey across the country as it visits the six finalists in the running for the Most Patriotic Town in America title. They'll be posting to a blog at www.bestoftheroad.com.

The winning city will be announced July 16th.
