Watertown Library Begins Testing Sunday Hours

It's good news for bookworms, at least for now.

Flower Memorial Library in Watertown is open on Sundays for the next nine weeks.

City Council commissioned a trial period, which started this week, to see how many people would come to the library if it was open on the extra day.

After the trial period is up, lawmakers will decide if the library will stay open on Sundays indefinitely.

Library Director Barbara Wheeler is gauging interest in all ways possible:

"I took the door count this morning, so we could see how many people would actually come through the doors today, which I probably will do every Sunday," she explained.

"And we will also keep count of how many books we'll check out today, how many items we'll check out today, and how many people will use the computers," Wheeler added.

Two temporary library clerks had to be hired to man the returns desk on Sundays during this trial run.  If the library extends its hours to Sundays in the future, these positions will become permanent.
