Watertown Officials Reject Aviary Renovation Bids

A hefty price tag has put an end to plans to renovate a Thompson Park building.

Watertown's city council voted Monday night to reject bids to fix the zoo's aviary.

The bids had come in at roughly $1 million to renovated the 600-square-foot structure.

The council plans to meet with the zoo board later this month to come up with a new plan.

Mayor Jeff Graham said the structure might have to come down,

"If we can reach an agreement on a suitable open-air pavilion to be used for their educational program, yes, it would," Graham said.

"Just to retro-fit it into something else is just not panning out."

The meeting between city council and the zoo's board of directors is set for July 30.
