Watertown School District Warns Of Severe Financial Woes

Another school district is warning of even more severe financial problems ahead.

The preliminary budget for the Watertown City School District would use almost $12 million from reserves, just to keep the tax levy hike below 5 percent.

The district plans to use up the rest of its fund balance the year after that.

"And by the 2014 - 2015 school budget year, we'll have depleted our fund balance. In fact, we'll probably be looking at a deficit budget that is a shortfall of as much as $3 million. It might be a little less," said Superintendent Terry Fralick.

And that's even including a two-year package of spending cuts expected to be finalized over the next two weeks.

Fralick says those cuts will most likely involve some teachers.
