Hockey fans will be cheering for the Wolves when Watertown's new Federal Hockey League team takes to the ice this fall.

Team owners Top Shelf Hockey announced the new name Friday morning. They say they received 1,000 nominations and votes in a naming contest open to the public.

Team owners say they received emailed votes from throughout New York state, as well as Utah, Virginia, Ohio, Georgia, Oregon, Massachusetts, Canada and Afghanistan.

Owners say they received 290 names in the contest and narrowed the choices to Blizzard, Ice Storm, Vortex, Whiteout and Wolves.

The person who first nominated "Watertown Wolves" will receive a pair of season tickets for the 2014-15 season. Owners say they'll release the winners name as soon as he or she is notified.

The Watertown Wolves logo and uniform, and team mascot will be revealed over the next weeks in an upcoming press conference.

The Federal Hockey League is entering its fifth season.

Opening night is scheduled for October 17.
