Watertown Woman Takes Part In Pro-Life March In Washington

It's been 39 years since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision made abortion legal in the United States.

Thousands of abortion opponents marched in Washington, D.C. Monday to mark the anniversary. Among them was Watertown resident Elisa Stanley.

"You're moved because there are people with their babies, people with their young children," Stanley said.

"There's tons of young adults, which was very encouraging and hopeful, and then you have the elderly even there," she added.

But not everyone in Washington Monday was pro-life. A separate group of demonstrators celebrated the legalization of abortion.

In a statement Monday, President Barack Obama called a woman's right to choose to have an abortion a "fundamental constitutional right."

But Elisa Stanley says she was moved by the March for Life, as it's called. She says the annual event leaves a lasting impact.

"For the last 39 years that people have been standing up to show that they don't believe that is the appropriate law for us as Americans that should take the life of a child," she said.

The march has been held every year since 1974, a year after the Supreme Court ruling.

It's consistently one of the largest protests each year in Washington.
