Watertown's Hydro Generators Off Line Longer Than Usual

It's no secret to anyone who's looked. Water levels on the Black River are low.

All three hydropower generators in Watertown are off line because of low water levels.

While that's typical for this time of year, water superintendent Mike Sligar says the generators have been off longer than usual this summer and there's no telling when they'll be back on line.

"They'll come back on line when it rains and I can't predict that," Sligar said.

"As the summer's been running, we've already been off line longer than we were this time last year," he said.

"I would anticipate that we'll be into, perhaps, the second week of September before we bring the first unit back on line."

The sooner the generators go back on, the better. Hydropower is a big source of revenue for Watertown.

The city hopes to bring in $3.3 million dollars this year by selling the power. It's 8 percent of the city's budget.
