Watertown's New Vortex Sign 'Disappears'

Has Watertown's new vortex sign gotten sucked into another dimension?

Less than two weeks after the city officially dedicated a sign marking "Watertown's Area 51," the sign has disappeared from its Thompson Park home.

Two cones now mark the spot where the sign used to be.

It turns out the city took the sign down so it could pour concrete into the base to make things more stable.

Officials said they hope to put the sign back up Wednesday.

On October 18, the city dedicated the sign to celebrate folklore about paranormal activity at Thompson Park.

Since the park opened in 1905, there have been tales about vortexes, unexplained disappearances as well as strange apparitions and noises.

The designated the spot as "Watertown's Area 51" after learning that the codename for Area 51 in Nevada was "Watertown" in honor of then CIA Director and Watertown native Allen Dulles.

The intense secrecy surrounding the Area 51 base in Nevada has made it the frequent subject of conspiracy theories and a central component to unidentified flying object (UFO) folklore.
