Wednesday: Two Soldiers From 10th Killed

Two soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division were killed Monday by an improvised explosive device ( roadside bomb), the military announced Wednesday.

The bomb exploded near their vehicle in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

208 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year, according to the web site www.icasualties.org. More than half of the deaths in 2010 suffered by coalition forces (the U.S. and allies) are the result of roadside bombs.

Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Christopher F. Cabacoy, 30, of Virginia Beach, Va.

Pfc. Edwin C. Wood, 18, of Omaha, Neb.

Staff Sgt Cabacoy and Pfc. Wood served as cavalry scouts with the 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. 

Staff Sgt. Cabacoy joined the Army in March 2000 and arrived at Fort Drum in October, 2009.  He was previously deployed to Iraq from January 2004 to January 2005.

Staff Sgt. Cabacoy is survived by his wife and son.

Staff Sgt. Cabacoy's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal,and Combat Action Badge. 

Pfc. Wood joined the Army in October 2009 and arrived at Fort Drum in April, 2010.

Pfc. Wood is survived by his parents.

Pfc. Wood's awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Combat Action Badge.

Commander of the 1st BCT Colonel William Burleson said that his greatest hope was to bring home all of his soldiers alive after their hard work and taking care of eachother every day.

Colonel Burleson spoke with 7 News before this incident occurred.
