Massena Teen Drowned In Grasse River

A Massena teen drowned in the Grasse River Tuesday night while swimming with friends.

That's according to Eric Duchscherer, president of the Massena Rescue Squad.

Duchscherer said the victim was a 17 year old boy.

7 News has confirmed the victim's identity as Donald Bemis.

The drowning took place at a popular swimming spot behind Calvary Cemetery and Adath Israel Cemetery in the village.

Duchscherer said the teen and his friends were attempting to swim across the river.

According to Duchscherer, two of the friends looked back and saw the teen was missing.

The called 911.

Massena Rescue and its dive team responded to the scene as did state police, village police, U.S. Border Patrol and St. Lawrence County's dive team.

Duchscherer said the teen had been in the water for roughly 30 minutes before he was found in about 10 feet of water behind Adath Israel Cemetery.
Attempts were made to revive the teen, but he was pronounced dead at Massena Memorial Hospital.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Thursday.
