A Lewis County man is accused of shooting and wounding a dog that was chasing deer on his land.

Sheriff's deputies say 57 year old Dale Mathis of West Leyden allegedly shot the dog with a .22-caliber rifle.

He was charged with a felony count of aggravated animal cruelty.

The wounded animal returned to its owner's residence.

Deputies say charges are pending against the owner, 25 year old John Cullings -- also of West Leyden -- for letting his dog run at large.
