Who's Packing? NY Knows and Now So Do You

Owning a handgun in New York State doesn't come without a permit and now those permit holders have suddenly become public.

Whospackingny.com received the list from the State Police and posted the thousands of names and addresses of people who have a permit to own a handgun.

And for them, having their names and addresses online is like having a target on their own backs.

"This is saying 'here's where there are firearms and if you want them, come and case this location and wait for the opportune moment and break in and get them," says Tom King of NYS Rifle and Pistol Association.

For most kinds of licenses in New York, except for driver's licenses, they are wide open to public record.

State Senator Joe Griffo is just one of the lawmakers calling it an abuse of public records law and is pushing a bill that would stop a single request from generating an entire data base.

Griffo says that criminals now have a road map to homes of those who do have guns and those who don't.
