Why Senator Ritchie Voted Against Gun Bill

The gun control vote was a tough call for north country state Senator Patty Ritchie.

That's because the bill also included Mark's Law, the measure she sponsored that makes it more serious to kill first responders like emergency medical technicians and firefighters.

Mark's Law was named after Mark Davis, the Cape Vincent emergency medical technician who was shot and killed while responding to a call.

"Because of the additional items that were in the bill that actually increased regulations and restrictions on legal gun owners, I had to vote no on the omnibus bill," said Ritchie (R. - 48th District).

Also voting against the gun control bill was state Senator Joe Griffo (R. - 47th District).

He says it punishes law-abiding citizens and was never negotiated or discussed in the light of day.
