Wind Turbine Parts Boost Business At Local Port

Piece by piece, the massive wind turbine components are being off-loaded from the cargo ship BBC Hawaii and placed at the Port of Ogdensburg, where they will later be taken to the Marble River Wind Farm in Clinton County.

It's a project that provides close to 70 jobs and pumps hundreds of thousands of dollars into the north country economy.
                                                    
"It's very important...We're putting men to work, which we need," said David Putney, vice president of the International Longeshoreman Association.

This is the first time since 2008 the port has handled wind turbine components - only this time it's a larger scale project.

The port has secured cargo handling agreements for two separate wind turbine projects through Canadian-based Transera International Logistics.
 
"In addition, there's going to be 210 inbound rail cars with blades coming from Colorado," said Wade Davis, executive director of the Bridge & Port Authority.
                                            
A second ship carrying additional wind turbine parts is expected to arrive at the Ogdensburg Port next Sunday or Monday.

Meanwhile, there is the potential for even more windmill components to move through the port in the next few years as the wind energy industry grows.
