Work To Begin On Downtown Watertown LandmarkIt'll be the first major work in more than 60 years on a downtown Watertown landmark. The Soldiers and Sailors monument was erected in 1891 and is showing its age. Bronze figures corroded are green and the base is showing gaps and cracks. But later this month a $100,000 restoration will get underway, including a thorough cleaning and any needed repairs. When it's done, the monument should look practically brand new. "Hopefully, the project will really restore the monument to its original beauty. It's going to be a nice cleaning of the monument and really improve the aesthetic of the piece. A state grant will cover 75 percent of the cost. The city will pick up the balance, minus some private donations. |
