You Know It's Icy When A Plow Slides Off The Road

Glittering ice made Cape Vincent into a winter wonderland, but not many people were enthralled.

"It's beautiful, but it's not good for the trees," said Drina Kay of Cape Vincent.

Communities along the St. Lawrence River were among those waking up to freezing rain.

Branches drooped and some limbs came down.

But fortunately it stopped before there was widespread damage.

For many people, the sight of ice weighing down branches and wires brings back all too familiar memories of devastating ice storms from the past.

Ken Steblen of Clayton remembers watching the ice storm of 1998 unfold.

"And it was just amazing - the sound of the poles snapping. This is mild compared to that," he said.

The ice slowed traffic on the Thousand Islands Bridge.

When a snowplow slides off Interstate 81, you know it must have been slippery.

But most people took the day's challenges in stride.

"We're good, hardy north country people. We're used to it.  You just deal with it," said Stefan Czerwinski of Clayton.
