Your Health: Yellow Dot Program Can Save Lives

Jefferson County Sheriff John Burns says a little yellow dot could save your life.

"With the Yellow Dot Program, we have all the information right on the sheet," he said.

When rescue crews get to an accident scene and see the yellow dot, it tells them a packet with your medical information is in your car. 

Emergency officials say this information is extremely important.
 
"Its important for EMS to know a little about your medical history when they get there and quite often that piece is not available, especially if you're unconscious," said Charles Brenon III, Jefferson County Emergency Medical Services director.

Participating in the program is easy.

Simply place the sticker in your rear driver's side window. 

Fill out the card with your information and put it in your glove compartment.

Burns says even if you aren't unconscious at an accident, the yellow dot can be helpful

"We had a motor vehicle accident this morning and the lady was trapped inside the vehicle. Trying to get her medical info out of her at the accident scene was difficult," said Burns.

It's easy to get a yellow dot packet.

They're at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department front office. 

They should be in other places soon as sheriff's departments around the state are beginning to push the program.
