Zoo To Name Pavilion After Longtime Watertown Mayor

The new pavilion at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park will be named for a longtime Watertown mayor.

The girders are being placed this week on the Karl R. Burns Education Pavilion.

The late mayor served the city from 1976 to 1983.

Depending on the weather, the facility should be finished by the end of this month with a debut planned in August.

"We're really excited about having this opportunity as a venue that we can have more educational programs. Our guests can have some cover area to get out of the sun or get out of the rain," said John Wright, zoo executive director.

The covered pavilion replaces the old aviary which was torn down.
