Zoo Welcomes New Hedgehog

Hannah is quite a handful.

Hannah is the new African pygmy hedgehog at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park.

Hedgehogs instinctively curl into a protective ball at the first sign of danger and that's what Hannah's likely to do when you first meet her.

But, when she opens up, you'll find her friendly - not to mention very, very cute.

"They're pretty friendly. People tend to get them as pets around here. They don't necessarily take care of them as well as they should because they kind of need a special diet," said Cassie Vinette, volunteer coordinator.

Hannah replaces the zoo's former hedgehog which died of old age.

She'll be used a lot in the zoo's education programs and will never outgrow her usefulness.

She should grow about one or two centimeters more.
