Svetlana Sorokina Takes Plea Bargain

A woman, who took her son from northern New York to the Ukraine in violation of a court order, took a plea bargain in Jefferson County Court Friday.

Svetlana Sorokina pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct and was sentenced to 15 days in jail.

However, since she has already spent five months behind bars, Sorokina will be released as soon as immigration issues are resolved.

A Jefferson County grand jury recently indicted Sorokina on misdemeanor counts of custodial interference and criminal contempt.

That was less serious than the original charge against Sorokina, custodial interference as a felony.

Sorokina allegedly abducted her nine year old son from Watertown to her native Ukraine.

She was caught when she returned to the U.S.

The boy is still in Ukraine.

John Moody of Watertown is the child's father and hasn't seen the boy in more than two years.

"I want him to know very much that I love him," Moody told 7 News.  "He's my son, he's my boy."

He said he met with the district attorney's office and made the decision that it was in the best interest of his son to have one parent care for him.

"Maybe 5, 6 years he'll come back. He'll want to know who I am again," Moody said.

The DA's office agreed to offer Sorokina a plea bargain.

The boy was being cared for by members of Sorokina's family while she was in jail.

Moody said his decision was a painful one, but hopes his son will reach out to him when he's grown.
