Your Turn: Your Feedback On McHugh & Soldier DWIs

By Diane Rutherford

North Country Congressman John McHugh has been nominated by President Barack Obama as the new Army Secretary.

We asked for your thoughts on that:

For the United States Army, John's nomination is great news. John has been a great advocate for the North Country and will be sorely missed. His seniority in Congress has helped us repeatedly over the years.

Tom Nichols

Fort Drum's commander  says wants to have all soldier DWI cases go before him under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Major General Michael Oates says he's frustrated that some of his soldiers are still drinking and driving.

Here are some of your emails:

Let the DWI offense put a huge dent in, or even ruin a soldier's career, which is just what applying the UCMJ will do in these cases.

Thomas J. Hamilton

Mark Reynolds

The general is in denial of his soldiers' need for treatment, not punishment. Their DWIs come from self-medicating their PTSD, which has re-wired their brains, making their response to alcohol unpredictable.

Losing half their base pay for 3 months and losing rank (1-2 steps) might get through to them and teach them a lesson. I know it did for me when I had a DWI 20 years ago when I was active duty.  No further episode since!
