Shirley M. Swain, 83, of 10617 County Route 12, Station Road, died early Friday morning, July 3, 2009 at home under the care of her family and Lewis County Hospice, where she had been ill for the past year.

She was born on December 11, 1925 to Harry and Martha Clark Hulbert in Lowville, NY. She graduated from Lowville Academy and from Canton Agricultural Technical Institute with a Dietician’s degree. She was a loving wife, mother, and homemaker. She married Bruce Swain on October 2, 1944 at the Woolworth Memorial Methodist Church in Great Bend. She had a small business in her home where she sold apples and pumpkins in the fall. She was a member of the Woolworth Memorial Methodist Church. She was a Girl Scout leader in Great Bend for several years. She enjoyed knitting, gardening and the outdoors and camping. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Bruce, and three children; a son Dennis and his wife Katherine Swain, Swanzey, New Hampshire; a daughter Kaye and her husband Michael Washburn, Deer River; a son David and his wife Mona Swain, Great Bend and a daughter-in-law Sue Swain, Tylerville. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren

She is predeceased by a son Donald Swain, who died in 2002.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 from 6 – 8 PM at the Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home Inc. 500 State St., Carthage. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Funeral Home with the Rev, Andrew R. Mulvaney, Pastor of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Black River, officiating. Burial will follow in Swinburne Cemetery, Deer River.
